Forecast Graphic for 8/17/12It’s been a strong week weather-wise so far, with numerous showers and severe thunderstorms effecting the Baltimore area most of Tuesday night–including a few tornado warnings!  It’s been continuing today with some showers and storms currently affecting parts of the DC metro.  Will the wet weather continue through the weekend, or will we see more nice weather?  Read on to find out!

A cold front is progressing eastward towards the DC area tonight, which is leading to some scattered showers and storms this evening, which will continue into the overnight hours and early tomorrow morning.  More widespread showers are currently affecting the Frederick area.  A lack of instability in the air will help keep widespread severe weather from popping up with these storms, but locally heavy rainfall, strong winds, and some lightning are possible in some of the isolated cells.

The rain should move out of the area by Saturday afternoon as the front progresses south and stalls over Southern Virginia.  Skies should begin to clear during the afternoon.  The more northerly wind behind the front will lead to slightly cooler temperatures in the low- to mid-80s.  Some areas in extreme Southern Maryland could see some showers into the afternoon since that area will be closer to the front.

The cooler temperatures will continue into next week, hovering around the mid-80s through mid-week.  More showers are possible later in the PM Sunday into Monday as another system comes towards us from the northwest.  Otherwise it will be partly cloudy Sunday.  So far, things are looking to clear up for Wednesday and Thursday.
